CASE STUDY: BESPOKE OFF-ROAD DRIVER TRAINING - WALES
Tailored Programme Delivered by All Terrain Services Ltd
When a regional environmental-management company approached ATS with the brief of upskilling their field-team in challenging terrain driving, our goal was clear: deliver a practical, high-impact training day that improves driver confidence, safety, and capability in off-road, uneven and remote conditions.
Client Brief
Company: A Mid-Wales environmental services firm (hereafter “the Client”)
Location: A moorland / forestry site near Aberystwyth (Mid-Wales)
Scope: 12 staff members, all experienced on-road drivers but limited off-road exposure
Requirements:
A full-day on-site training course covering 4×4 vehicle control and safe line selection in rough terrain together with tow recovery.
Use of Client’s own 4×4 fleet to keep relevance high
Focus on risk management, safe vehicle recovery techniques and environmental sensitivity (i.e., minimal ground disturbance)
Outcomes desired: Increased driver competence and confidence; reduced risk of vehicle damage or environmental incident; documented training record for audits.
The Solution: How We Delivered
1. Site Assessment & Custom Planning
Our ATS instructors visited the Client’s site ahead of the day to assess terrain features (steep grades, water crossings, loose gravel slopes) and to tailor the course accordingly.

2. Pre-Training Brief & Vehicle Setup
On the day, we started with a classroom session: reviewing vehicle capabilities and pre-use checks together with tow recovery gear inspection and environmental best-practice. Then we moved to the field.

3. Hands-On Practical Modules
-
Driving techniques: line choice, gear selection, throttle control, descent management
-
Recovery: using snatch straps to safe effect
-
Bog & water crossing: marking safe routes, vehicle prep, exit strategy
-
Risk/Hazard identification: how to spot soft ground, hidden ruts, obstacles
Each delegate rotated through exercises using the Client’s vehicles, under instructor supervision, with live debriefs.

4. Review & Certification
At the end of the day each delegate completed a practical assessment and received an ATS-branded certificate of competence, along with a summary “what worked / what to improve” sheet for the Client’s training records.

The Result
-
All 12 delegates successfully completed the course and demonstrated improved off-road capability according to our post-training assessment.
-
The Client reported: fewer hesitation-moments, quicker vehicle recovery response and increased driver confidence when working in remote / rough terrain sites.
-
The Client now has a documented training record and plan to repeat the course annually as part of their company’s risk-management strategy.

Testimonial
“The day has genuinely transformed how our team approaches difficult terrain – thanks to ATS for a professional and very practical training experience,” said the Client’s Operations Manager.
