Return Visit to deliver BORDA Standard Level Off-Road Training for Coastal Officers

All Terrain Services was pleased to return to support Coastal Officers from a district council with a further BORDA Standard Level Off-Road Driver Training course, delivered directly on their operational beach environment.

Having previously worked with the team, this latest visit was arranged to provide training for new staff members joining the service, as well as to ensure drivers were fully competent in the operation of a newly acquired vehicle that has recently been introduced to their fleet to ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act and PUWER regulations.

Supporting New Team Members

As organisations grow and evolve, it is essential that new staff receive the same high standards of driver training as existing personnel. The full-day course provided two delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate vehicles in challenging coastal conditions.

Delivering the training on the beaches where the officers regularly work ensured that every aspect of the course was directly relevant to their day-to-day responsibilities.

Familiarisation with a New Vehicle

Introducing a new vehicle into an operational fleet presents an ideal opportunity to review driver competencies and ensure safe working practices are maintained.

The course allowed delegates to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of the new vehicle while operating in realistic conditions. Particular attention was given to vehicle handling characteristics, safe operating techniques on soft sand and loose shingle and understanding how the vehicle performs across varying beach conditions.

This practical approach helps organisations maximise the benefits of new equipment while ensuring drivers remain confident and competent in its use.

Practical Training in a Real-World Environment

Throughout the day, delegates covered key aspects of the BORDA Standard Level syllabus, including:

  • Vehicle checks and preparation

  • Driver responsibilities and risk assessment

  • Understanding terrain and route selection

  • Safe driving techniques on sand and loose surfaces

  • Maintaining vehicle control and momentum

  • Environmental awareness and responsible driving practices

  • Vehicle limitations and operational safety

  • Incident prevention and recovery awareness

By combining theory with extensive practical driving exercises, delegates were able to build confidence and develop skills that can be immediately applied in their operational roles.

Maintaining Operational Competence

Regular driver training plays an important role in maintaining safety standards, particularly for organisations operating in demanding environments such as beaches and coastal access routes.

Our return visit highlights the ongoing commitment of the local authority Coastal Officers to ensuring staff are appropriately trained and equipped to carry out their duties safely and effectively, while making the most of their investment in new vehicles and equipment.
